Thania Muñoz D,Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Spanish at the Dept. of Modern Language Linguistics & Intercultural Communication at UMBC
Thania Muñoz D. is a writer and an Assistant Professor of Spanish, Latin American and Latinx literature and culture at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She is an immigrant from Jalisco, México and has familial ties to Türkiye . She immigrated to California in 1998 and since 2015 lives in Maryland. She grew up being called an “immigrant” - a term she found uncomfortable at first, but now cherishes it, as it has shaped how she experiences the world. She is raising (or learning how to) two Mexican Turkish kids, en español and Türkçe. She received her Ph.D. at the University of California, Irvine in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Her academic work focuses on immigrant literature, memory studies, poetry, and translation.
Thania Muñoz D. escribe y es profesora de español, literatura y cultura latinoamericana y Latinx en la Universidad de Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Es una inmigrante de Jalisco, México y tiene lazos familiares en Turquía. Inmigró a California en 1998 y desde el 2015 vive en Maryland. Creció siendo llamada “inmigrante” – término que le incomodaba, pero que ahora aprecia, porque ha cambiado la manera que ve el mundo. Está criando (o aprendiendo cómo) dos niñes mexicanos turcos, en español y türkçe. Recibió su doctorado en la Universidad de California, Irvine, en el Departamento de español y portugués. Su investigación académica se enfoca en la literatura inmigrante, estudios de la memoria, poesía y traducción.
Yolanda Valencia, Ph.D. Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Geography and Environmental System at UMBC.
I am a scholar, writer, and assistant professor at the Department of Geography and Environmental System at UMBC. At age of 17, I along with my mother and one sibling, migrated from Michoacán Mexico to join our growing and vibrant immigrant community residing on the unceded lands of the Colville peoples (currently known as Pasco Washington). There, I worked in the agriculture and food processing plants before attending Pasco High School a year later. In 2019, I completed my PhD in geography at the University of Washington, Seattle and joined UMBC as an Assistant Professor. Currently, I along with my two amazing daughters, live in the unceded lands of the of the Piscataway and Susquehannock peoples. Drawing on transnational approaches, my work focuses on understanding how undocumented immigrants make meaningful life amidst state-sponsored violence in the United States. I currently teach classes on qualitative methods, Latin American Geographies, and Geographies of Migration.
Soy académica, escritora y profesora asistente en el Departamento de Geografía y Sistema Ambiental de UMBC. A la edad de 17 años, junto con mi madre y una hermana, emigré de Michoacán México para unirme a nuestra creciente y vibrante comunidad de inmigrantes que residen en las tierras no cedidas de los pueblos de Colville (actualmente conocido como Pasco Washington). Allí, trabajé en las plantas de agricultura y procesamiento de alimentos antes de asistir a la Escuela Secundaria Pasco un año después. En 2019, completé mi doctorado en geografía en la Universidad de Washington, Seattle y me uní a UMBC como profesor asistente. Actualmente, junto con mis dos increíbles hijas, vivo en las tierras no cedidas de los pueblos Piscataway y Susquehannock. Basándome en enfoques transnacionales, mi trabajo se centra en comprender cómo los inmigrantes indocumentados hacen una vida significativa en medio de la violencia patrocinada por el estado en los Estados Unidos. Actualmente doy clases de métodos cualitativos, geografías latinoamericanas y geografías de la migración.
María Célleri, Ph.D(she/hers) Assistant Professor in Gender, Women’s + Sexuality Studies at UMBC.
She received Master’s degrees in Gender Studies and Latin American literature and a PhD in Ethnic Studies. Her work centers on the Andean region, specifically Ecuador around issues of space, belonging, gender and racial equality, and cultural production such as film and literature. She is a passionate and dedicated professor who teaches courses in feminist methodologies, feminist film, Latin American gender issues, and decolonial feminist studies. She was born in Venezuela, to Ecuadorian parents, and was raised in Brooklyn, NY. She also loves the outdoors. She is a rock climber and is part of the Latino Outdoors DMV chapter where she leads outdoors outings in the Baltimore area.
María Célleri (ella) es una profesora en el departamento de género, mujeres y sexualidad en UMBC. Ella recibió maestrías en estudios de género y literatura latinoamericana y realizo su doctorado en estudios etnicos. Su trabajo se centra en la region andina, en particular en el Ecuador en torno a cuestiones de espacio, pertenencia, equidad de raza y género, y producción cultural como cine y literatura. Ella es un profesora dedicada que enseña cursos de metodologías feministas, cine feminista, cuestiones de género en America Latina, y estudios decoloniales feministas. Ella nació en Venezuela, de padres ecuatorianos, y creció en Brooklyn, NY. A ella también le gusta las actividades al aire libre. Ella practica escala y es parte del capítulo Latino Outdoors DMV en el cual dirije salidas al aire libre en el area de Baltimore.
Melisa Argañaraz Gomez, Ph.D(she/hers) Assistant Professor in Residence at Urban and Communities Studies Program at University of Connecticut, Waterbury.
Melisa is a youth activist, collaborator, and advocate. She was born and raised in el conurbano bonaerense, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her experience as an immigrant from Argentina to Spain shaped her research interest in immigrant deservingness and community activism. In her work, she explores how Black, Brown, and Indigenous Latin American (im)migrant youth build community, create spaces of care, reciprocity, and solidarity seeking migrant justice in cities like Baltimore. She employs a variety of community-based action methods. Some of her projects include “All about Baltimore Map” in partnership with Latinx summer scholars in Centro Sol- Center of Salud/Health for Latinos and “Parqueologia Migrante” (parqueologiamigrante.com) in collaboration with al Latinas Migrantes and CASA de Maryland. In 2022, Melisa received her Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Systems at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. When not writing or in community, Melisa enjoys running, reading speculative fiction, and hanging out with her cat Pochoclo.
Melisa es activista y colaboradora juvenil. En enero empezará como profesora en el programa de estudios urbanos en la Universidad de Connecticut, Waterbury. Ella nació y creció en el conurbano bonaerense en la provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Su experiencia como inmigrante de Argentina a España dio forma a sus intereses de investigación, en temas como narrativas del merecimiento de los inmigrantes y activismo comunitario. En su trabajo ella explora como jóvenes inmigrantes construyen comunidad, crean espacios de cuidado, reciprocidad, y solidaridad buscando justicia migrante en ciudades como Baltimore. Ella emplea una variedad de métodos de acción basados en la comunidad. Algunos de sus proyectos incluyen “All about Baltimore Map” en colaboración con Latinx Summer Scholars en Centro Sol- Center of Salud/Health for Latinos y “Parqueologia Migrante” (parqueologiamigrante.com) en colaboración con al Latinas Migrantes y CASA de Maryland.
